CMC Alpine Campus new building is going vertical

Standing on a top story deck of Bristol Hall on Wednesday afternoon, it was easy for Brian Hoza to point to the concrete outline of the stairways, elevator shafts, hallways and auditorium that will be part of the Colorado Mountain College Alpine Campus’ new 60,000-square-foot academic building.
Hoza, dean of student affairs for the Alpine Campus, also was able to point to a line of vertical steel beams that will reach up to the roof of the three-story building being constructed below him.
Construction crews on Tuesday started to erect the steel frame of what will be the front of the $18 million facility and are expected to finish pouring its foundation this week. Hoza, who attends weekly meetings about the building’s construction, said that after…
Friends of the Chief are under contract

The mission of the Friends of the Chief group to acquire and renovate the downtown Chief Theater as a performing arts center for the community:The Chief is currently under contract with the Friends of the Chief, with the stipulation that the group put down earnest money of $50,000 within the next three weeks. The group has raised $15,000 and is looking to donors to come up with the rest.Once the earnest money is secured, the group will be able to apply to the USDA for a grant to purchase and renovate the old theater as a small performing arts venue for the community.The Chief, along with the Steamboat Art Museum, can become a focal point for the arts in the center of downtown Steamboat.

Population increases 3 percent

The county population increased 3 percent from 2007 to 2008. Routt County was home to about 22,980 people as of July 1, 2008, compared with 22,302 in 2007.The area median income for Routt households was about $75,700 in 2008, according to the indicators.The Community Indicators report showed that in 2006, people leaving Routt County had an average household income of $47,462. People moving to Routt had an average household income of $63,376.The city of Steamboat Springs publishes its own population estimate each July.Routt County's 2008 population increase is larger than those of previous years. The population increased nearly 3 percent from 2006 to 2007, 2 percent from 2005 to 2006 and 1 percent from 2004 to 2005.
Lance Armstrong signs onto Steamboat's Honey Stinger Team

Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong has signed on as a part owner of Steamboat Springs-based energy food company Honey Stinger. The world renowned professional cyclist also will play a role in future product development and endorsement.
“I first tried Honey Stinger products during a mountain bike race in Colorado,” Armstrong said in a news release. “I was impressed with the great taste and energy they provided. Honey Stinger works for me in training and racing because you want to eat them and they work.”
